Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend an inner-city urban school in a densely populated city. It is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the district and all of my students live far below the poverty line.
In all other respects they are typical eight-year-olds - mischievous, hard-working, enthusiastic, kind, silly, hilarious and creative.
They are as wonderful as third graders are all over the world, but they also struggle to have things most of us take for granted: food, transportation, clothing, and books.
Many of them are learning English as a new language, and all of them are trying their best during this crazy, difficult year of the pandemic. When you talk with them it is hard to remember the many challenges they face, as they greet most days with a smile and great deal of motivation to learn.
My Project
The past year has been challenging, but my trusty old MacBook worked hard every day to help me make my students' lessons meaningful and accessible. However, being older and in constant use for the last 14 months has taken its toll.
Updating the technology used in my classroom will be of enormous help to both my students and myself.
A new MacBook Pro laptop will make it possible to easily connect the variety of devices I have acquired over the past year.
Teaching students both in the classroom and online has been quite a learning experience, and I have tried to keep the children engaged by utilizing projectors, document cameras, tablets, and even on occasion, my own phone. These devices have been a big help, but my old computer is having difficulty connecting to the newer drives. A new laptop would help me seamlessly work these devices together.
