My Students

54.1% of the 1,116 students at my school come from economically disadvantaged homes. A large portion of my own students come from homes in which they are being raised by their grandparents or extended family, and are one of multiple children in the household.

Less than 75% of my students have access to books at home that they are actually interested in reading, and those same students have also stated they don't have enough time during the day to visit our school's media center to check out a book to read.

As a realistic teacher, I am sure the percentage of my students who actually desire checking books out to read for pleasure is even less, and it is my goal to change that by offering my students access to a classroom library. My hope is to have books of varying grade levels and subjects so that each one of my students can find something that they are capable of reading but is also interesting to them.

My Project

The majority of my students do not have access to interesting books at home that are appropriate for children their age. Without having free access to books to read during their free time, the past-time of reading for pleasure is almost nonexistent in todays middle school society.

I teach middle school English Language Arts to resource students who qualify for special education services, with over 90% of my students are reading significantly below grade level (ranging anywhere from 3rd to 5th grade reading levels).

By providing my students with a classroom library full of interesting titles that cover a variety of reading levels and subjects, my students will have more time and a better opportunity to find a book that interests them, making reading seem less like work. Having a classroom library will also allow me to incorporate daily reading time into our class time, which will not only help students with their reading fluency and comprehension, but also give my students an opportunity to transition to a quiet activity before beginning our daily lesson.

As a teacher who fell in love with getting lost in a good book while finding my way through middle school, help me share my love of reading with my students by providing them with the necessary materials!
