I'm blessed to work at a special education center school for students in grades K-12. Our amazing program is located in Michigan. We serve students with a wide variety of psychiatric, cognitive, and behavioral needs. We serve students from our entire city.
Our school has 37 beautiful young people with varying strengths and weaknesses.
Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
I believe if you check with most administrators they will tell you: Lunchtime is one of the most difficult times of the day to manage behaviors. Many behavioral infractions occur during that time, as well as student conflicts. At TPA, we are looking to combat this difficult time by providing an incentive to our students in the form of a positive student lunchtime lounge that students can enjoy. This positive, encouraging, structured-fun space will not only curb problem behavior during lunch, but it will also motivate students throughout the morning to earn enough "points" to enter. Presently, students are eating lunch in their classrooms, which is socially isolating.
We would like to create a space that encourages our special needs students to develop their social-emotional skills as well as enjoy their lunch.
For this space to be a success, we will need a variety of engaging items to keep the students occupied after they are done eating. We are requesting a retro-style video game table system for the room. We just know the students will adore this item, and we believe this will help begin to create a space the students will love to come to. Thank you so much for considering our project!
