Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My kids don't have, on a regular basis, the luxury of seeing plantings placed in their line of sight for the pure joy of color, peace and tranquility that such landscapes promote. They have not had the opportunity to create a garden from their own personal labor, start to finish, that they can say is theirs. On any lunch/recess hour in which I have gone out with my fifth graders with a bag of trowels and a shovel, other students have left their recess games to watch and petition for a chance to dig. From the mouth of a fourth grader watching us work, "Excuse me, how do I apply for this job?" Every time students dig and move soil, they are actualizing a vision and creating something that they will be able to say they made. This has been particularly important as we return to school and start looking for those activities that make us feel safe and normal.

Help us finalize the garden we began digging and preparing in November '21 with the right drought-resistant plants and water-retaining soil amendments needed to make it a lasting visual treat and spiritual support.

We are in a rush to complete our venture. We need to supplement our soil with coco coir and mulch to help it retain moisture (this garden is in a concrete area with direct sun). We need to obtain plantings and get them in the soil as soon as possible to give them a chance to develop and acclimate before the intense heat of early June. We have been saved by relatively cool weather, but that time is nearing an end. Please help us complete this so that our kids can lunch with lavender, or coreopsis or coneflower!
