Lunch Time Loaners

My students need 8 iPad minis to work on Achieve 3000 articles and iReady program during lunch because they do not want to mingle with other students.

My Students

"The best thinking has been done in solitude." ~ Thomas A. Edison We have students who actually enjoy being alone for lunch and would love to just -indulged themselves in reading. By doing this they would increase their reading Lexiles and improve their standardized test scores.

My students are middle school age and some have trouble fitting in with other students.

Some of these students have social disabilities such as Asperger Sydrome, while others just prefer being alone. During lunch some students go to our gymnasium where they are supervised and others just hang out at the tables until the bell rings. Some students read while others mingle. I have had many students come to me to use my computer or laptop to work on Achieve 3000 not just because they like the program but because they want an escape from socialization. We are a small PreK-8 school located in a very rural area. In fact sometimes we have snakes or alligators at our doorstep upon entering school. We have flooded twice for Hurricanes Rita and Ike. Last year a levee was built around our school so that we will never flood again. We have a high poverty level with over 51% of our students on free or reduced lunch. Because we are such a small community Stakeholders are rare.

My Project

Our Lunch time loaners find comfort in technology. Because of this they engage in computer related programs. Their isolation gives them opportunity to grow. We have computer based programs at our school that have helped us to attain outstanding school performance scores such as Achieve 3000 and iReady. Both programs move students according to their lexile or achievement and continues to push them according to ability. We reward students for high performance and this gives these students a way to gain self esteem through high performance.

Donating to my students would improve their lives in a big way.

They thrive with technology. Technology and Reading are their socialization and is what they find comfort in. Having them succeed will strengthen their self esteem and who knows maybe one day they will be eating with the other students.
