My Students
Good reading habits are the foundation for success in most of my students' future endeavors. Unfortunately, the majority of teens who attend my high school don't read on their own. Some can't. However, in order to master this imperative skill, students must actually read. I want to encourage them.
I work at a huge urban high school in Los Angeles nestled in an impoverished city.
Desperation coats the bleak neighborhoods where my students live. A staggering percentage of our students haven't yet scored proficiency in reading as demonstrated on the state tests and when casually polled, most of our students don't read for pleasure on a consistent basis nor do they consider reading to be enjoyable. It is my mission to reverse their perceptions and show them how meaningful and exhilarating reading can be!
My Project
I want to continue to develop the library sponsored weekly Book Club. Every Wednesday at lunch, I close the library so that only participating members of Book Club can enter. Scattered throughout the library are several individual reading circles---each group is reading and discussing a different novel over lunch. Each session of Book Club lasts four weeks and then students select from a few new book choices to read and talk about. While I have several collections of titles, I need to provide an even wider variety of genres and to update my selections in order to appeal to the diverse reading levels and propensities of our population and encourage even more students to show up.

Reading is a fundamental skill, yet people can't master it if they don't practice it. I hope you will help me motivate students to practice reading by providing them with an engaging, social venue in which they can read as a community and feel that reading is meaningful, purposeful and fun.
