Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our elementary school serves pre-k- 8th grades in three different buildings in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. We primarily serve Latino, ELL, low income students, students with disabilities and a recent uptick of newcomers and students in transitional living.

Help us provide our students a safe space to share healthy meals, form new bonds, develop a sense of belonging and community while learning valuable socio-emotional skills.

The school counselor and I hold monthly themed lunch and learn workshops for our middle school students in grades 4th-8th grades. Students have been signing up to participate in these workshops this school year and given us positive feedback such as “ Yes, I will sign up again”, “This was fun!” and “I look forward to seeing my friends.”

Our theme, activities, and healthy snacks change every month. Examples have included healthy relationships, mindfulness, and coping skills. We hope to hold future workshops on stress management, mental health awareness, empathy skills, reducing test anxiety, and social media/cyberbullying. These supplies such as stickers, SEL books, yoga cards, art supplies, fidgets, and sensory bottles will help us continue to provide fun, hands-on activities, healthy snacks, prizes and an opportunity to create safe spaces for our students while learning essential socio-emotional skills.
