My Students

Our school is in a high risk area of the city. We are a Title I school and over 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our families struggle every day just to provide the basics for their children. Our school has a very high population of English Language Learners and many of our parents are also just beginning to learn English. Our school makes every effort to assist families with everything from food and clothing to supplies and transportation.

My students are eager to learn and grow to be the best that they can.

These children just need a little extra attention to achieve in this distance learning environment. Providing them with opportunities to explore, collaborate, and learn is essential for their academic success.

My Project

This project will provide students with a space-themed library and a wearable Lunar T-shirt. The shirt will help students envision the observable shape changes of the moon during its monthly orbit around the Earth. When students create their T-shirts, they predict and demonstrate the sequence of events in the lunar cycle. The outline for the project is pre-screened on the fabric and students fill-in the moons using a black permanent sharpie and glow-in-the-dark paint. Then they will color the rest of the shirt and label each phase of the moon.

Art reinforces science essential knowledge and skills, and is a great activity for kinesthetic learners.

With such a diverse population, it is essential that we teach to all learning styles. This project will provide a fun, engaging activity that will reach far beyond the classroom.
