Lunar New Year Tranquil/Calming Corner for Special Needs Kindergarteners
Help me give my students the gift of a "calming corner" for our special need classroom in celebration of the Lunar New Year! Students will have the opportunity to calm down, reflect, and read books to celebrate.
As a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom daily.
Despite these challenges, I am looking to provide my students with positive & meaningful learning experiences.
My students are my world!
They love to be read to and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I focus on their strengths, not their disabilities! I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. I am fortunate enough to be able to spend time with my students every day! By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue a path of academic success.
In receiving books on the Lunar New year and material for a tranquil, calming area, my students with special needs, they would be able to achieve a multitude of new skills including but certainly not limited to effective communication skills, increased academics and literacy exposure, positive reinforcement, and so on.
I am so excited about this incredible opportunity for them.
With the use of the calming materials and literature, subjects could be brought to life! They would be able to widen their knowledge base using self-help skills to calm down, refocus, and reset in the classroom by a multi-sensory approach.
