Lunar New Year: Crafting Culture and Curiosity with Panda Express

My Project
February 2024 is rolling in as the year of the dragon, as per the Chinese Zodiac. Special thanks to Panda Express for being the catalyst behind it all with their complimentary, "Let's Explore!: Lunar New Year" curriculum. I have been exploring ways to enhance culturally responsive teaching and global awareness in our classroom and Panda Express is helping us get there. During our Lunar New Year exploration, students will craft dragon puppets post-reading "Bringing in the New Year" by Grace Lin and "Nian, The Chinese New Year Dragon" by Virginia Loh-Hagan. Drawing inspiration from "Playing With Lanterns" by Wang Yage, they'll design paper lanterns. Book display easels and decorations aim to captivate students in discovering more through stories. We will dive into the Asian history of fireworks with a Time for Kids article. To top it off, virtual tours with Google Arts and Culture and the National Museum of Asian Art await us.
My third graders adore crafts of all kinds; celebrating Lunar New Year lets students showcase their artistic passion while enriching their reading and social science skills.
