Lunar New Year Celebration: Year 2

Help me give my students Chinese zodiac stencils, beautiful dragon coloring books, and coral stock to learn about and join in Lunar New Year celebrations.

My Project

Lunar New Year is celebrated in multiple cultures, many of which involve marine themes such as seafood cuisine, veneration of the ocean, and legends such as that of the deep sea monster Nian. Ocean conservation has become part of Lunar New Year celebrations around the world from China, Korea and Vietnam, to Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia, and even Florida and New York. Indonesia hosts many Lunar New Year events, including a sea celebration at LihagaTae Island, coral reef events in Sulawesi, and celebration of a special conservation project off the island of Palau Bontosua. Under the sea offshore are 46-foot-high letters spelling the word “hope.” The letters are frames on which coral clippings grow, part of one of the world’s largest coral restoration projects. Corals spawn once annually, according to a lunar cycle.

My students would benefit from making Chinese zodiac art to learn about the cultural and community importance of traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, as well as joining modern New Year ocean conservation activities.

Last year we acquired books about these traditions and started a Lunar New Year aquarium theme highlighted by attaching a gold furry-looking coral fragment to a terra cotta rabbit to encrust and grow from year to year. I am currently on the hunt for a reef-safe dragon figurine, since 2024 will be the Year of the Dragon - the 60-year cycle green Wood Dragon, to be precise. We need coral stock to add to our dragon and tank to carry on our tradition, grow out, and share with other reefkeepers. It is exciting to be a part of schools and conservation groups in guiding the next generation to learn about Lunar New Year and come together in traditional and modern celebrations of this rich holiday.
