Lunar New Year and Chinese Silk

Help me give my students resources to learn more about Chinese science, history and culture.

My Project

We study the history of China in sixth and seventh grade. In both years we talk about the importance of silk. I want my students to have the opportunity to explore more about the silk production process.

For this Chinese new year, my students will be exploring the science of silk, silkworms and phases of the moon.

Understanding these phenomena will give them a better grasp of Chinese history and culture.

When we talk about the Silk Road, students will be able to look at samples of the silkworm and silk production process. The microscope slides will let them understand more about the nature of silk and how it compares to other textiles.

When we talk about Chinese cultural traditions, we will use the book about Chinese new year and lunar cycles to better understand what is being celebrated and why it doesn't happen on January 1.
