Welcome to 1st grade! We live in a very rural area where resources are scarce and poverty is prevailing. However, these students have an amazing opportunity and advantage to come to school in a safe environment where they can put their hands on technology and experiences that they may have never seen!
My students are my inspiration!
They are growing and learning in the same small, tight knit, school community that inspired me to be a teacher. They are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, jokers, and questioners. They are inspirations to me and others around them, even if they don't know it. They are world travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, and engineers. They are our future and I want to give them a great start to their future success.
My Project
In my classroom everyone is a teacher! My students need a horseshoe table for teacher and student led discussions and small groups (reading and math). First graders need one-on-one and small group time with the teacher to meet the needs of each individual. A horseshoe style table will allow me to hear, reach, and discuss with every student who sits at the table for small group instruction. I currently use a large table (and sometimes the floor) which makes it very hard to reach and hear each student. I often ask students to move around so that I can hear each one of them while reading.
A horseshoe style table would allow me to hear each student while reading without having to interrupt their thought process.
Having this table will allow me to better work with each child so that we can meet their individual reading needs. South Carolina's reading statistics are scary but with the help of a better reading foundation we can change this trend!
