The students at Lubec Consolidated School are part of a close knit community in Downeast, Maine. They enjoy spending time together both during their school week, and during their leisure time. Students spend each school year, from Preschool to Grade 8, together in the same building. Children spanning several grade levels will unite for many events, including Craft Day, which is a day when community members make crafts with students for the holidays, and Field Day, which is when students work together as teams to compete in games, such as a relay races and tug-of-war.
The school gym is a principle place for students both during and after school hours.
As well as being used for Physical Education and school wide assemblies during the day, it is used after school hours by students for extracurricular sports, such as soccer, cross country, basketball, and softball. Students from Lubec are committed to teams during every season of the year, and spend many afternoons participating in practices and games in our gym. Siblings, parents, cousins, grandparents, and great grandparents can be seen cheering for their home team, the Hornets.
My Project
We live on the beautiful coast of Maine, and have access to ocean beaches. Each fall our students participate in the Coastal Cleanup Project, and comb the beaches for trash. They tally their findings, and consistently notice how many plastic drinking bottles they find. They wonder what else they can do to eliminate plastic waste, especially in the oceans.
Students can learn first hand that by refilling water bottles, not only do they maintain good health by drinking fresh water, they reduce the amount of plastic in their environment.
The water fountain will encourage an appreciation for cleanliness. Students will have water available throughout the day to maintain health. Plus the fountain has a Green Ticker display that informs the user of the number of 20 oz plastic bottles saved from one time use waste. School pride will spread to students, and their families, creating a far-reaching impact.
