Low-income Students in Need of Resources to Learn about Animal Habitats
The cost of six sets of books about animals and science is $685, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Two first grade units are focused on "Animals" and "Animal Homes". The unit on "Animal Homes" will begin in May. In this unit students will be exposed to the different kinds of animals and the homes that they live in. At the end of the unit, my class will be expected to write about an animal and their habit with precise detail.
The problem is that the students haven't been exposed to many different animals and their habitats since we live in a city. We are currently raising some money for a possible field trip to the zoo but it would be very beneficial for the students to be exposed to the animals prior to the possible trip through other resources, such as books, visuals, and other resources for the students to access. I currently own a few books, but they don't provide the needed information in kid-friendly terms, therefore they are hard for the children to use independently. It is very difficult to teach the students by sticking to the book that the district provides us. The additional resources will assist the students academically and increase their scores on the writing assessment.
