Loving Literature through Listening

My reluctant readers need personal CD players with batteries and six award-winning books on CD to entice them to learn to love reading.

This middle school caters to a delightful group of urban students, most of whom qualify as high needs, many of whom cannot read yet at the appropriate grade level, and all of whom deserve outlets for their passions and creativity. About five hundred students in sixth through eighth grade attend, which means that there are hundreds of growing, forming minds in our halls and rooms every day. What an opportunity!

I have spent two years teaching seventh grade language arts at this school, and have seen students make huge progress in their reading abilities during that time. However, I am still floored at the beginning of every year to find that the majority of my students cannot yet read at the seventh grade level. Over the past two years, my students have started the year reading, on average, like fourth graders. Because they cannot comprehend grade-level-appropriate material that appeals to them, many of these students have simply given up on reading. They utilize independent reading time to stare blankly at a page, and detest all reading assignments. Some of the truancy at our school, I am convinced, is even due to the fact that many of these students struggle so hard to understand what they are reading in class that they have given up.

In talking with other successful teachers with similar students, I have become convinced that a Listening Center with engaging novels and corresponding CDs can serve as a huge incentive to students who otherwise would not begin reading or even come to class. Rewarding one or two reluctant readers who arrive in class on time and on a regular basis to listen to their book while reading it would be a great way to hook these students not only into a one-time experience, but into the world of reading success.

Now, with your help, we can provide students who do not like school and do not like reading with the motivation to get to language arts class and to read engaging and challenging books. Your generosity will make it possible for these students – many of whom simply believe reading is boring – to listen to, cherish and read their own book. You can help them see the joys of literacy.
