Loving Literature In The Early Years

My students need a deluxe listening center and four big books in order to enhance their experience with literature.

My Students

My students are full of life and come in excited to learn. I want to provide them the best educational experience that I possibly can. Our school is a Title One campus where one hundred percent of our students receive a free breakfast and majority are on free lunch.

I would consider my classroom to be a true melting pot where we are all working together to enrich each others' educational experience.

Our students come to us with different economic backgrounds, language differences and cultural differences. We are unique in that we can take each others' differences and learn from each other in our class. We truly are a family. I feel lucky to be their teacher.

My Project

Many of my students come to me not knowing much English. I am their first experience to the English language. I have many students whose parents do not have the opportunity to read with them at night because they don't know English. It is important that my students are exposed to as much literature as possible inside our classroom. I work them everyday on a small group level. However, I want to give them exposure to as much literature as possible even when they are not with me. They need the opportunity to be able to experience books firsthand. A listening library will help my students experience more books during centers when I am not working with them. Big books are especially important in kindergarten because students are able to participate in the reading experience and pick up on fluency, phonics and vocabulary skills at a quicker pace. These materials would not go to waste and I know my students would appreciate it. My hope is to develop in them a love for books and reading.
