I am the teacher to children from a low income, high-poverty, inner city community. My classroom is full of curious, energetic, eager learners. Almost all of these kindergartners have not experienced school before entering kindergarten this year. They are forming their first opinions about school and about themselves as students. They are ready to learn and grow!
The majority of the students qualify for free and reduced price lunch.
These kindergartners come from a diverse background, including homes experiencing poverty, special needs backgrounds, and many English language learners. But all have in common that they expect and deserve a great school experience and this project will help me give it to them.
My Project
My students need a place to gather every day as a classroom community. They need a classroom rug where can sit for morning meeting, listen to stories, share experiences and learn together. This will allow them to be comfortable and see up-close for learning.
Because my students come from less privileged homes, many do not have their own books, haven't been read to regularly, and have heard up to 30 million less words before coming to school than other children.
The quality children's literature in this project will expose my kindergartners to good stories, new vocabulary, and great book discussions on our new classroom rug.
The children also need an open-faced bookshelf that allows them to see the covers of classroom books. This will help my beginning readers choose books that interest them and capture their attention.
