My students need 3 ring binders, mobile drawers for organizing their guided reading materials, and an engaging literacy curriculum that is student led and up to date with current state standards.

My Students
I teach first grade at an elementary school in South Philadelphia. My students enter the classroom each day excited to learn how to read, write, and for most-- speak English. They each have a heart of gold paired with motivation and determination to be the best that they can be.
Our school population is 100% economically disadvantaged and 40% English language learners.
Our students come from all over the world including Nepal, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia, Mexico, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Laos, and of course South Philadelphia. Our school provides a nurturing environment for students, staff, and families to enrich them academically and grow as positive social contributors in our world. Our parents are extremely supportive and involved in their child's education, although many of them do not speak English. We use extensive resources to communicate with our parents in their native language. Our parents and students aspire to succeed and achieve their goal of living the American Dream. Due to the School District of Philadelphia's financial crisis, all of our educational supplies, resources, and materials are either limited or non-existent.
My Project
Students learn best when they know the expectations and feel safe and orderly in their environment. I am creating an OWL (organized while learning) binder for each student so that they will have the necessary tools for transporting homework and important communications home to their parents. This procedure has worked well in the past, and students like to feel as though they've taken ownership of their learning and respond well to this type of responsibility.
I have also asked for a reading, writing and math curriculum developed by Deanna Jump and DeeDee Wills.
These women have worked tirelessly to create an engaging curriculum based on interesting fiction and non-fiction texts. It is an easy to follow program for the teacher with minimal planning time, which will greatly increase the time for teaching students! Students will learn effectively and be engaged all while meeting the common core state standards expected of our district.
