About My Students

The best thing about being a teacher is that every single day you get a brand new opportunity to do great things in the lives of your students. Not everyone can say that about their career. This Life Skills class is especially unique because it allows me to do projects and activities not usually touched upon in classrooms.

Stephanie and Emily, the leaders of this project, are model students. They have such positive attitudes and come in each day always inquiring to learn more. They are open and honest and encourage students to be confident enough to share their feelings also. This creates the perfect learning environment for a class that's aim is to help students learn to deal with the challenges and stresses that come with being a teenager in today's society.

Self esteem and self confidence are two areas of teenage adolescence that so many of our students are struggling with. Through this project, we will first use our literature resources to reinforce the importance of engage in positive self-talk. We will then use our instant camera to take "selfies." We will glue them to a blank canvas and fill the empty space with "I Am"or "I Can" statements.

Not only does this project reinforce reading and writing goals, it assists students in developing a deeper understanding that they are not alone in their struggles and stressors by collaborating with each other as they openly share them with their classmates.

In Their Own Words

I am so excited to be able to incorporate something most kids our age do every day into a school project. This unit will help me and my classmates develop a stronger belief in ourselves and do it in a creative way. By brainstorming our "I Can" statements, writing them, and then putting our canvas in a place where we can see them every day, we will begin to influence how we see ourselves.

I'm looking forward to be able to share the things I struggle with daily with my classmates. I hope that by being open and honest, I will encourage others to do the same. I hope that by leading this project, I can gain more self confidence to become a leader in other areas outside of school.

I have seen many of my classmates struggle with their images of themselves and I can see that they don't have a lot of self-esteem. I hope that this project can help students to appreciate more of what they have and think less about comparing themselves to others. If we can learn to see ourselves in a positive light, this will only help us as we face our next challenge of high school.
