This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are brilliantly resilient scholars who come from immigrant, blue-collar working households close to downtown LA. Many of them attend school year-round to catch up on reading and writing skills. These students tirelessly work toward fluency in English while continuing to persevere through the struggles of their community. The culture we are promoting at our school is college readiness through the use of AVID strategies such as physical organization, note taking, and paraphrasing. Students show up every day ready to tackle the days' objectives and build community with one another.
My Project
Many of my students are facing homelessness due to the ever-changing landscape of our city. Families struggle to survive and parents do the best they can to provide a home for students, but many are faced with forced evictions due to gentrifications. My students need hygiene items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, body cleansing wipes, and personal backpacks to help fulfill their basic needs so while they are at school, they have an opportunity to maximize their learning. Many times, the non-academic comforts lead to academic gains.
If a student feels comfortable, clean, and valued they will then be able to have confidence to take risks and learn in the classroom.
Other items such as clean socks, underwear, and snacks can give students the opportunities to feel loved and cared for. Many times, in homelessness, kids are left feeling powerless and vulnerable. Through the generosity of this project, students will be able to have a backpack loaded with items dedicated to their own hygiene which we know is so impotent to 6th graders. They already feel judged being homeless and try hiding it as much as possible, they will no doubt take ownership of their goodie bag and feel at ease in the classroom.
