My Students

Poetry....a word that usually elicits groans from students will be forever changed when I use this book to teach poetry in my classroom.

The students who attend my school are poverty stricken.

They have had few enriching experiences in their lives. This is a challenge as a teacher to try and give my students the experiences they lack. This book is one way to show how poetry can be painlessly integrated into their lives.

My Project

This book starts out with a boy who writes "Poetry is for girls, so I am not writing it." And it shows how he comes around with help from some classic poetry and a visit from author Walter Dean Myers. Even though the book is fiction it seams so real.

This project will foster a love for poetry within my classroom.

It will show my students that poetry can be fun and relevant in their lives. With some help from you, my students will become lovers of poetry for life. Not only will these books benefit the students in my classroom they will be shared throughout the entire sixth grade.
