Love Tennis

My Students

My students love sports! Sure, basketball and football are fun units, but how many adults go out and play these? I want to teach more lifetime sports, so my students will develop a love for sports that they can continue to play into their adulthood.

I teach at a Title One School, where around 60% of my students qualify for a free or reduced lunch.

Statistics show that students in a low socioeconomic status have higher stress levels (cortisol) and lower self-esteem. Students are also at a higher risk of obesity and lower test scores. My students are hard workers and open to learning new skills. Studies also show that when students are moderate-vigorously active 30-60 minutes a day cortisol levels go down, an increase in BDNF (Miracle Growth for the Brain!), an increase in self-esteem, and students will do better in school! By teaching lifetime sports students will feel successful and want to participate after-school physical activities. Students only get quality physical education one day a week for fifty minutes, so students choosing to be moderate to vigorously active after-school or during recess, is vital to students health and well-being!

My Project

My students will learn some basic tennis skills, such as: serving, backhand, forehand, smashing, lobbing, basic rallying, and age appropriate games. My students need tennis trainer balls, so that the speed of the ball is slower, the size of the ball is bigger, and the red and yellow design is great for head-eye coordination.

Tennis is a great lifetime sport.

I surveyed my students in the beginning of the year, many of my students had never tried playing tennis. I know many adults that continue to play tennis as an individual sport for fitness and fun. I want my students to learn activities like tennis, so that my students can choose to be active for a lifetime.
