Help me give my students a laminator and art materials to make books for toddlers and preschoolers as well as a variety of books to use as examples when creating their own books.
My students come from a diverse array of cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds. They are pregnant or parenting teens who want to finish their education and learn how to be wonderful parents.
I want my students to gather the skills and resources necessary to be successful as a parent and as a student.
Teens with adult responsibilities need support and understanding to have success in school. We offer a calm atmosphere where the student can bring their child and learn the skills to be job market-ready or be prepared to further their education.
A parenting teen does not understand how their schedule will change and they need a class schedule that can work with their parenting schedule. Through the chaos of new parenthood, I want to support my students to prepare them for life after high school.
My Project
Many of my students did not have books in their homes and did not have anyone who read to them. I now want to introduce the students to all the books that most kids would have enjoyed before they started elementary school.
I want to create excitement for reading and a love of books.
If my students develop a love of books, then they will share this love with their own children. Using the laminator, the students will be able to create books that toddlers and preschoolers can touch and use. The students can use the materials such as pompoms, chenille stems and wiggle eyes to create sensory books as well as story books that they will use with the preschoolers in the daycare center as well as reading to their own children.
