Got the wiggles? Who doesn't love listening to books?

My great new second graders will be a very diverse group of students.

For the first time my school is adopting having inclusion classrooms, which is very exciting. As all classrooms, this classroom will be a group of 7 and 8 year old students with varying abilities and interests.

My Project

With a group of rambunctious 2nd graders to come the availability of therapy balls as a seating option would be of great benefit. Many studies have shown how increasing movement throughout the day increases blood flow to the brain, gets excess wiggles out to assist in better attention, and strengthens the core muscles. All of which would be of great benefit to LEARNING! For my language arts class in particular I have many students who are have parents that work multiple jobs, thus have difficulty with assisting in the daily homework and reading log. MP3 players would greatly assist in the exposure of all types of literature to these students. Listening to different books not only models appropriate fluency, but also to the much needed vocabulary. Many students in my classes lack this exposure, thus have limited exposure to vocabulary.

With a previous background in physical therapy, I have been wanting to pilot the usage of therapy/exercise balls as seats in the classroom.

I truly believe that the use of this alternative seating will assist in learning and decrease behaviors. The use of MP3 players will be of great benefit to my students. At this age they still love to learn and have a thirst for a good book. However, they lack the resources to great books! This will give them access to books beyond their reading level!
