My Students

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. Our daily activities revolve around books and my students can't get enough! Baskets and bins of books fill every available corner and crawlspace. It is with delight that I watch my students peruse the offerings, make their selections, and settle down with their stack for some reading fun. While it's amusing to watch them carefully cross the room as they balance their books, it becomes frustrating for them when they don't make it without a spill. Of course then there's the chore of putting them all back -- here, there, and everywhere.

My Project

I've had great success with the King Series readers already received. My students look forward to the small group activities that begin with these books, in large part because each child has their own book. I plan to begin a Book Checkout Program with the King Series readers as the core library. I would like students to be able to share these stories they so enjoy with their families at home. I'm also requesting a 20-compartment cabinet with bins in order to organize our various reading collections including the King Series readers and other sets focusing on colors, numbers, animal families, the alphabet, etc. Students would be able to pull out a bin of books for easy transport to their reading location of choice and not worry about a complicated return process upon completion.

My young learners are just beginning their academic adventures and a love of literature is a big part of that success.

I wish to foster and facilitate my students' access to as many books as I can. The King Series readers will provide an opportunity for them to take books home for family reading. A cabinet with bins will allow me to create a centralized location where students may grab a set of books to read wherever they like. The love of literacy really is king in Pre-K!
