My scholars are a creative and innovative group. My goal is to help them realize their potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their individual strengths. While there have been many new challenges this school year as we navigate new ways of learning since the COVID-19 pandemic, my scholars are meeting these challenges with resilience, flexibility, and perseverance. As we prepare for the new school year, we are considering ways to make our small-group reading instruction more approachable, relevant, culturally diverse, and fun.
We would love to introduce several MathForLove games and tools in our small-group intervention lessons, to help students develop critical thinking, discover patterns, build automaticity, and gain math confidence.
MathForLove is a program that teaches "mathematics in its whole context." They believe that, "Mathematics begins by playing… with games, puzzles, patterns, shapes, numbers, structures, rules, and ideas."
With games such as Prime Climb, Tiny Polka Dot, and Rolly Poly, scholars will practice basic mathematical operations and explore with numbers in a fun, engaging way. As MathForLove says, mathematics begins by playing! They will also explore with patterns, shapes, tiling, and space with modernized pattern blocks, and experience addition and multiplication facts in multisensory ways (dots, tallies, tens frames, etc) with Addition By Heart and Multiplication By Heart cards.
