As a first grade teacher in an inner-city, Title-1 school, I have the awesome responsibility of coaching my students as they learn to read. Research has shown that reading aloud to children plays a very important role in children's reading readiness. Not only does reading aloud help students learn basic reading behaviors, develop a sense of story, and hear what good, fluent reading sounds like, but early reading experiences truly entice children as they fall in love with books and story and want to become a part of the "reading club".
In my school, many children come to first grade without these early reading experiences. Many of them have not consistently been read to. Therefore, we read aloud several times a day. Despite having a classroom full of children, our read alouds are cozy, intimate experiences. We gather together on the rug and I read with expressive voice, modeling what good reading and reading thinking sound like, as well as bringing my children into the story by facilitating partner talk. This is often my class' favorite time of day.
Because reading is such a large part of the first grade curriculum, MANY books are needed to keep students engaged. Students read throughout the day independently, with partners, groups, and the whole class. We read all different kinds of print for all different reasons. My library is greatly in need of quality read aloud books. I have carefully chosen quality, engaging literature by award-winning authors and illustrators, including Kevin Henkes, Mercer Mayer, Cynthia Rylant, Angela Johnson, and several others. These books will be a wonderful resource to help children fall in love with stories, and ultimately, with reading. If you choose to donate to this project, you will truly impact the lives of young children, by giving them the gift of books and stories that can be read, reread, and loved forever.
