This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I hate reading! Why do you force us to read?" This is what I use to hear for independent reading time. I found it difficult that my students were so turned off by reading. I turned them on to urban fiction. They love it. All they want to do is read, have read alouds and class discussions.

My students are energetic and love to learn.

They are very engaged when the material relates to them. They love it when I create lesson on an interactive whiteboard. They did not like to read and the problem was the different genres of book they were reading. They felt disconnected because it did not represent them. My students do not have the economic means to purchase reading books. Their local library usually does not carry the titles in which they are interested in. Due to the high crime rate in their community, my students cannot travel outside of their neighborhood. It would be difficult for my students to travel to another library that may have the book(s) of their interest. My students have shown a high interest in independent reading because of authors like Walter Dean Myers and Sharon Flake. They especially love the Bluford Series. I would like to have some popular book titles available in the classroom library.

My Project

These books will help them with their reading comprehension skills. Most of my students read on a 3rd to 4th grade reading level. Since they become disinterested in reading, they do not read at home, so therefore they are not improving their reading comprehension. All it takes is interest to motivate them and read at home which will make a big difference. They become so excited when its time to read. I am so happy to see that. My literature circles will now become more meaningful because they actually understand what they are reading so it is easier to analyze. They will develop the love for reading and do away with their negative outlook about it. During my read alouds, I was teaching one of the Bluford Series book, my students grasped plot, theme, and inferring, which are very difficult to comprehend. I have seen a 10% growth in their assessment grades.

Being raised in a high-need community myself, I know the feeling of not having resources available.
