This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 6th grade students actively ask for more individual reading time, cheer when it comes, and stay focused on reading the entire time. This is even though many are reading at a level far below grade level, often feel frustrated with reading and writing. Some view themselves as not good readers. I want to continue encouraging them to love reading by providing them with books that allow them to access higher level content that engages their critical thinking and topics that interest them. Graphic novels allow students who read at a lower level to access chapter books that involve these more complicated, advanced topics that fit their age.

Math manipulatives build mathematicians!

I tell my students that the best mathematician is not the fastest mathematician nor the one that never struggled. These manipulatives allow students struggling to understand a topic to approach it a different way, visualize it in a way that may help their understanding. It will support them in feeling confident in math.
