My Project

Reading is the elementary students' biggest struggle. Many of our students struggle to find the joy of reading in anthologies and decodables. The teacher's biggest struggle? Getting our kids to pick up a book!

I want to promote literacy and excite students about learning by giving the third grade quarterly "Book Tastings".

This activity would happen once a quarter in each third-grade classroom. We would set the books up around the room with summaries and items that relate to the story. Students can read a bit of the book and see if it interests them. Students will sign up to read in one of the literature circles for the books they are interested in. Students can sign up for more than one literature circle, but the teacher will decide which literature circle the students will actually be in if they have chosen more than one option.

Three copies of each book were requested so that the books in the classroom could be used in literature circles during the quarter. The students in each literature circle will read the book independently and then come together to discuss the book once a week using structured discussion questions. At the end of the quarter, students can create a project to be displayed at the next book tasting to spark interest in other students in different third-grade classes.
