My Project
I am an elementary school special education teacher and I work with students who are struggling with their academic learning. With their academic struggles brings a bit of social hardship as well. It has been disheartening to see my students return to school after COVID-19, with a sense of frustration. They felt behind/different before and now they are much further behind and have a greater need for emotional support. Social and emotional learning, self regulation, these are skills that need to be taught alongside the academic learning that they are being taught. At this point in time, I don't believe that one is more important than the other, I think that both areas need to be addressed with equal measure.
I plan on using all the social stories and emotion books to help teach my students how to identify and regulate their own emotions and actions.
I will use the lessons in the books as examples for the students to follow. In order to practice these skills in real time, work on their peer interactions and relationships, the students will participate in preferred activities (games and toys that encourage positive play and interaction), building with Magna-Tiles and using the marble run.
