My Project
In my middle school ELA classroom, students are growing in their reading and writing skills—but for many, especially English language learners, that growth depends on tools that allow them to hear language clearly and independently. That’s where headphones come in. Each week, my students complete individualized iReady reading lessons that include audio instruction, videos, and vocabulary support.
These lessons are critical to meeting each student where they are and helping them grow.
Without headphones, it's difficult for students to focus. Noise from one student's computer becomes a distraction for others, and students who need to listen closely—especially ESOL students—can miss important content. With a reliable pair of stereo headphones, each student can fully engage in their personalized reading instruction.
Many of my students are also working to build reading stamina and fluency through audiobooks. Listening to a book while following along with the text helps them improve pronunciation, vocabulary, and comprehension. For ESOL students, audiobooks offer a bridge into English that feels accessible and encouraging. For struggling readers, audiobooks can help restore confidence and a love of storytelling.
Unfortunately, we don't have enough working headphones to go around. The few we have are often shared, broken, or uncomfortable. Some students go without and try to listen through their laptop speakers, which affects not only their learning but the concentration of others around them.
