Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My seventh graders sometimes struggle to find a book that really speaks to them. This year as I was preparing a display for Latinx Heritage Month (aka National Hispanic Heritage Month), I realized I did not have enough books on Latinx lives to fill more than one book bin. "How are all my kids going to learn about their history? How will they pick books that reflect their lives and culture?" I thought. Considering more than 60% of my classroom and school identifies as: Latino, Hispanic, Mexican, Guatemalan, or speaks Spanish or Mam, this is essential to their learning.

I need books that educate my brilliant young people about ALL the cultures that are celebrated during Latinx Heritage Month: plenty of books about Mexican folklore, Guatemalan food and culture, the Afro-Latino struggle for recognition, and of course, soccer-futbol stars of Argentina!

There is SO MUCH to learn about and the ways kids learn is through browsing books lazily in a classroom until something sparks their interest, then reading enough that they find they "can't stop."

The flow of reading is what I'm after, and to do that I need to have a wide variety of books, so I'm on a mission to widen my library month-by-heritage-month.
