Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in grades nine through twelve. We are a small, public school tucked away in the mountains. My students struggle with their emotions due to varying disabilities.
We practice Community Based Instruction (CBI).
CBI is educational instruction in naturally occurring community environments providing students real-life experiences. My students need intensive instruction in functional and daily living skills. We run a school-wide coffee shop where employ-ability skills are learned through actual daily sales. They are responsible for completing their biweekly time cards.
My Project
My project is to help my students learn the basics of financial literacy.
My students earn classroom cash by completing assignments, showing citizenship and exhibiting positive behaviors and working in our school's coffee shop.
The store has small items like Gatorade and cookies, but I want to teach my students how to save for their preferred big-ticket items.
The students get paid for working in our classroom coffee shop and cafeteria. The students are responsible for their own payroll. They get paid with classroom cash, every two weeks. The store is open every Friday.
The big-ticket items will give my students opportunities to save their money, as opposed to spending all their earned money every Friday.
The big-ticket items will sell for four times what it cost on Amazon. The students will have to round up to the nearest dollar and calculate that price by four to determine the classroom price. An example would be the MP4 player. It costs $49.95, so the students would round up to $50 and multiply by four, costing $200 classroom tickets.
