My Students
Our intermediate-grade school helps 5th and 6th graders in beautiful Tennessee transition from elementary to middle school in an amazing environment that offers them a leading-edge education and extra-curricular activities that are top-notch. Our 1:1 computer environment couples with rigorous application of the standards to provide students with the best learning opportunities. Before and after school, we provide intramurals, chess club, First Lego League, and STEAM Academy to name just a few amazing opportunities.
The diversity is rich: students come from so many different socio-economic backgrounds.
The sweet thing is that harmony and tolerance are mainstream values at our school, and it shows. Students work hard at being learners and overcoming divisiveness.
All my students need enriching opportunities, and my goal is to provide that, whatever it takes. To give them the best opportunities, I am reaching out to you. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Please be part of our village by generously supporting projects that I've designed to bring opportunities to my students.
My Project
Books are life, I tell my students. Books transport you to other places and expose you to other ways of life. They enrich your way of thinking and offer you opportunities to become open-minded. Books allow readers to connect to characters, places, and events. Books show you how to be a writer. My students have embraced this message the first few weeks of school, but now they ask me, "Where are all the books, Mrs. Ray?" My 6th grade library is almost non-existent since I used to teach second grade. I've passed my second grade library on to other primary teachers. Now I need to build up a new library!
With these new leveled books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of fiction and nonfiction books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will increase their love of reading and add new crinkles to their brains!
