Have you ever looked at a book and been lost in it. My students love reading but find it hard to stay focused with all the classroom distractions. We are hoping that with headsets and CD's they will find themselves reading and enjoying a whole story.
I work with inner city children who are below grade level.
Some are speech-impaired, some learning disabled but most are just slow learners. They want to be able to get lost in a book but have low attention spans. Some are diagnosed with ADHD. Others just need the quiet to read and enjoy themselves.
Our school is a high poverty level with 96% of our students getting free lunch and breakfast. I want these children to learn to love reading as much as I do. With the thousands of distractions in a normal classroom, many of these students can't concentrate for longer than 5 minutes. I want them to want to read and learn how to do it in any setting. They can be reached but need a helping hand from you.
My Project
You can help them find their way into and out of good books. I selected a variety of reading books - classics and science. I want them reading all kinds of books and discovering the knowledge and joy that books hold.
I chose Smithsonian readers for them to learn about nature in their own backyards. These books are inspiring with great vocabulary and beautiful pictures. They will hold the students attention and teach at the same time.
The books about Arthur and Curious George will help them see that they can read about their favorite characters and enjoy them. The other stories are classics that they will also enjoy hearing and hopefully reading on their own some day.
You can help my students find the joy of a good book by donating to our cause.
They will read as well as listen to great stories because you cared. They will also be focused and learning pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, science facts, and love for reading.
