My Students

Early childhood is a critical time in every child’s development where a simple playtime activity can affect everything from social skills to motor skills! My class consists of up to 16 inspirational, energetic, highly motivated three- and four-year-olds who come from all different backgrounds. We spend time learning to appreciate our similarities and differences while supporting each other through play. Each day together is a new chance to learn and grow!

I teach in a Head Start center giving children, who otherwise may not have access to preschool, a chance to achieve these school-readiness skills.

My students enter my classroom everyday excited to learn. They have a curiosity about the world around them and spend their time asking questions and exploring their ideas! Each day is a new experience!

My Project

“The wider range of possibilities we offer children, the more intense will be their motivations and the richer their experiences.” -Loris Malaguzzi I teach at a Reggio Emilia inspired Head Start center. This child-centered approach believes children are full of wonder and curiosity and capable of constructing their own learning. By utilizing natural and neutral materials, or loose parts, the child has the opportunity to express their individuality without the demands other, goal-oriented materials may bring. I’m just beginning my Reggio journey and therefore only starting to form my loose parts collection.

These loose part materials will allow me to provide my students with a blank canvas for them to begin creating from within.

The paver, stone and river rock building sets will allow my students to explore balance without the pressure wooden architectural blocks may bring. The counting rocks allow my students to explore math without the distractions counters may bring. The natural loose parts collection provide a large variety of materials for my children to combine various pieces and create pictures or form letters. They can work on math skills by sorting, counting, or creating patterns. Natural materials also provide children the opportunity to discover more about the world around them. The natural loose parts open up room for discussions during their play about types of plants, the needs of plants, the textures they feel, or where we would find what we see. The possibilities are endless!
