My Students
Our mixed classroom consists of 1 fourth grade student, 1 fifth grade student, 5 six grade students, and 3 seventh grade students. My students have all been diagnosed with autism or an intellectual disability and stay in my classroom for most of the day. All of my kids are included with general ed for specials, lunch, and breakfast. The goal is general inclusion, and I look for this opportunity wherever possible.
Our classroom is full of different personalities, likes, and levels of academic achievement.
With each student working on individual IEP goals, I utilize center work a lot. A pair of students may be working on multiplication tic tac toe while at the next table over a pair of students is working on one to one number correspondence.
My Project
I would love to add a listening center to our classroom. With the range in age and ability I do not usually do whole class read aloud, instead, I rotate and read with individual students at a time. Having a listening center will provide another mode of listening to fluent reading while I am working with other scholars.
Reading has always been a passion in my classroom and I want to provide a scaffold for students who are struggling to read independently.
Although my students are in middle school, many read at an early elementary level. Storytime at the listening center will allow them to be exposed to more print and fluent reading.
