My Students
Dictionaries! What are they? Who uses them? Why?
Those are the questions I expect from my students when I introduce them to dictionaries. You may ask with spell check, and the big push to technology and computers, why even bother?
I want my kids to be as well rounded as they can be, and for my group of special needs students, just reading can be tough.
Let me explain,I get to spend the day with a cool group of kids, in grades 1-6, who are all identified with some physical, emotional or learning handicap. Some are just beginning to read and others may never achieve that goal, others are reading level one books independently. Along with their independent reading we do guided reading throughout the day, it is during these times with supervision, and the more challenging reading activities that I would like to have some very primary dictionaries.
I am asking for some very low level picture dictionaries that my students would feel comfortable with and will be successful in using.
My Project
Let me tell you a little about our school. We are the largest school in the county serving over 950 students in grades Pre-K to 8. Our county is located in rural Southeastern North Carolina, we are a large geographical county with no large cities or towns. Our economy is based on agriculture and the supporting industries. Our county supports seventeen schools so funding can get tight real fast. I realize that dictionaries may be quite a reach for some of my students, but others can make use of them, and the more well-rounded they can become the more successful they will be.
Just because they are special needs doesn't mean they are not capable of learning and contributing.
So I am asking for some dictionaries on the level of my young, emerging readers so they may grow and become as successful as possible for themselves and their families. Some day they too will give back to their communities. Thank you for your time and interest in supporting public education. You will never be able to know how powerful of an impact you have made on a young life.
Thank you
