This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you were in school and all the desks were lined up in rows facing the black board and the teacher lectured in the front of the room? Not in my room. My students learn on the carpet and they need a white board easel there for demonstrations and directions.
My class of 21 is very sweet.
They love to learn! At our school there is a very strong sense of community. All the students in my fourth grade class are neighborhood kids who have a strong desire to discover new things and challenge themselves. Many of them have been at our school since Kindergarten. In an urban setting such as ours this is a rare thing. Lots of students get bussed in from other less fortunate neighborhoods. These students are very strong readers. I am looking forward to doing some major book projects with them this year. This easel with the shelf underneath will allow me to leave project materials and books out for children to access. They are going to thoroughly enjoy being able to go to the easel and retrieve materials they need to complete work. I can see it now... "Ms. D., can we use the easel to practice our multiplication facts?!" This easel will give them a chance to do some peer teaching. The brain learns the most when you can reiterate the information to others
My Project
I am a first year teacher with very little furniture left to me in my classroom. I have been working all summer to build my classroom from the ground up. I do not believe in standing up in front of the class and lecturing to them. I don't feel it's affective and not all students learn that way. By providing my students with this mobile easel I can move it around the classroom to teach to small groups or use it with the whole class on the carpet. This will ensure that the material I am teaching them is being delivered in a more comfortable or individual setting.
This easel will have a significant effect on my students' learning.
They are used to learning on an easel just like this one. Because it is my first year I do not have the access to one myself. I would hate to change the style of teaching that is so prominent in my school building. Children thrive off of consistency and I would not want to provide anything else for them.
