This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Books open the doors to discovery! They take you to places that you have never been to and perhaps inspire you to visit new places. They also allow you to experience new situations and learn something new through the process.
Our school is located in a working class neighborhood.
The students and their families are mainly immigrants that came to this country for better opportunities. Our school is very diverse, coming from many different cultures and sociol-economic backgrounds. We have as two separate magnet programs and a regular program for students not involved in the magnet. All students at our school strive to do their best.
My Project
The novel Red Glass by Laura Resau will be a great addition to the 7th grade curriculum. Students at this age do not always like to read so having great reading material is a must. The novel describes a young boy's tragic experience crossing the border from Mexico into the United States. He meets a girl named Sophie and her family and they care for him until he is able to be reunited with family back in Mexico. With this book, I will have a resource that my students can relate to, being that many of them come from immigrant families. This book will also allow me to better teach important content standards that focus on characterization, theme, and plot.
This project is important because it will allow my students to have new reading material.
Due to the budget cuts, we have not been able to purchase current novels that will engage our students. With this project, I want to update our curriculum with engaging reading material and help to motivate our students to become lifelong, independent readers.
