I teach Film Studies to a great group of senior students at a large urban school where most students face daily challenges such as poverty and gang violence.
The students who elect to take this class love movies, but, especially in the beginning of the year, don't understand that most everything on screen is placed there to create an experience for the viewer. They watch films very passively, and are not media savvy.
The video recorders will allow my students to act as directors and cinematographers. In filming their own movies, they will make decisions regarding setting, lighting, and sound, etc. This will help them to realize that everything they see on screen has a purpose, and will make them more critical viewers of all media.
Your help will make it possible for my students to experience movies from the other end of the camera. You will empower them as decision makers and possibly even plant the seed for a future documentarian.
