Looking Like Me!

My Students

My students are active kindergartners that come from a variety of cultures, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. Many of my young learners face different challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their challenges and differences, they enjoy coming together and learning new things through hands-on experiences.

My students are explorers, builders, inventors, scientists, artists, readers, authors, and most importantly children, children who are filled with energy and a love for learning.

As a fourth year teacher, I desire for all my students to be able to learn through a motivating, engaging, and real world environment. I love the joy these young children have for learning, and I want to provide them with as many different resources as possible. My hope is to foster an environment where each young child that enters my classroom feels the freedom to embrace who they are by feeling welcome in my classroom.

My Project

My classroom is filled with very diverse children and every day they spend time exploring books in our classroom library. I have realized that many of my books do not show characters from various cultures and racial backgrounds. As I prepare for next year, I want to make my class a more inclusive space for everyone. I want to build a strong community and immerse my students in multicultural literature.

I want my students to "see themselves" in the books they read and know that they are welcome and respected.

These books will act as mirrors and windows into the world. Students will be able to reflect on their own lives by connecting to a book, or they can be given the opportunity to learn about someone else's life, someone different then themselves.
