This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Superheroes make mistakes, but never give up. They try their best to do their work and help others every day," is a motto, that my second-graders created and live by daily.

These students really are, in a word: super.

This year my second grade bilingual class are superheroes, and there couldn't be a more perfect theme for this dynamic bunch. Within this group, you'll find every type of hero. There's the questioner with the power to inquire about anything and everything; the informer, who uses life experiences and book knowledge to keep us in the know; the reinforcer, who reminds us of content knowledge and connects it to the real world; the dreamer, who tell us about the endless possibilities; the captain, who keeps the class motivated and at times, in line; and a host of others, making them the most powerful team around.

Our school is an elementary school sharing space with two other schools in a high poverty area of the South Bronx. Despite economic, socio-emotional and linguistic challenges, my students have amazing spirits and always strive for success.

My Project

Imagine a world where students open up books and find characters that are just like them. That's my goal. Our classroom library contains books with characters who are non-human, non-diverse and non-meaningful to my curious students. As a teacher, I always promote reading as a way to explore new worlds and open students' minds to new ideas, but I feel that by giving students an opportunity to read about characters from familiar places that look like them, their reading experience would become that much more significant.

According to Zaretta Hammond, author of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain, "Culturally responsive teaching is about helping culturally and linguistically diverse students who have been marginalized in schools build their skill and capacity to do rigorous work." Through this project I aim to empower students to have deeper, more meaningful conversations about texts that reflect their lives and communities.

This project will not only help me fill our bookshelves with texts that engage students in reading, but also tap into their ability to think critically as they discuss their new learning.

My students are diverse in almost every way. They have diverse ethnicities, diverse personalities and diverse interests. They should have books that are just as diverse as they are. With your donations, you can help me continue to empower my students' love for literacy.
