My Students

It might be hard to imagine but my special education students have so much in common with Edison; they understand what it means to persevere in the face of failure and constantly stay positive.

I have the privilege of working with kids who come to me every day knowing they’re going work, they’re going to stumble, but they’re going to learn.

They do it with a smile on their face because eventually they get their “light bulb” moment. The moment when their faces light up with the pride of understanding and success, it’s amazing to see. My Edisons come from diverse and varied backgrounds, but despite these challenges, they don’t fail. They find 10,000 ways to learn.

My Project

Hi/Lo books are high interest, low level books that are perfect for my students and our classroom library. As special education students in upper grades with lower reading levels, my kids often feel discouraged. The books they want to read are too difficult and the books they can read don't interest them, usually because the subject matter is geared towards a 2nd grader rather than a 4th grader.

This hi/lo book set would encourage my students as readers and help them to feel a connection to text they often miss out on.

Reading about situations and characters that my students can relate to without struggling is a powerful thing. I hope that by making these books available to them, they will develop both their literacy skills and a love of reading.
