Looking For the Chance to Teach, Looking for Alaska.
Help me give my students the opportunity to have amazing in depth discussions about serious topics teens deal with today by placing, "Looking for Alaska," in each of their hands and hearts.
Our students come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds and skill levels. They have opted to attend our medical pathway school for a number of reasons. The main reasons they will respond with are: it is small, personal, academically challenging, safe and unique.
Even though our students are all very different, they have so much more in common than they realize.
My goal, as their English teacher, is to help them celebrate their differences and to embrace their similarities.
My Project
I have been a teacher for twenty-seven years. I have watched the change in students over the years as parents worked more, commuted longer, sports changed from a season to year round, phones became their every day experience and stress, anxiety, self-isolation, sleep deprivation and depression have became common place.
The 9th grade team on my campus has developed a cross-curricular project titled, "Living My Best Life," where we try to help students pinpoint if there is something they can alter in their nutrition, behavior or technology usage to try to improve their social, emotional or physical well being.
The book, "Looking for Alaska," is an amazing read that touches upon a multitude of issues teens face today that align beautifully with this project. The 9th grade team wants to add this book in to our cross-curricular project to assist us in engaging on some very serious topics and issues.
We have been given the green light to add this book in as long as we can figure out our own way to finance this addition on our own.
