My students need a home for their classroom books where they can be displayed and categorize for them to borrow.

My Students
My students come from all over the globe searching for the American dream of a better tomorrow. Many would never have an opportunity to academic achievement if they had remained in their home country. The neighborhood the school is situated is in a working poor community of the Bronx. I have a lovely class in an urban elementary school in Bronx, New York where the population of the school is 1,400 and class sizes are at a maximum. My students are diverse in ethnicity and ability.
My Project
Presently, our classroom is filled with books everywhere that were acquired from other classrooms at some point. The bookshelves currently in the classroom have been nailed together over and over again and will not survive another year. The books range from Kindergarten readers to chapter books. Since the students in the class are also in a similar range reading levels, it would be foolish to remove lower level readers and keep only grade level books. We are so fortunate to have such a large range for those students that are newly arriving from other countries and those from disadvantage homes that are just learning to practice their reading to become better readers. However, without proper storage for our books, many get hidden among all the bins. By adding bookshelves to replace the ones ready to collapse, I will be able to spread out all of the books, categorize them and display them. This will then create an inviting display for my students as they browse the classroom library for their next journey into amazing world of literacy.
Donations to our bookshelf project will help us have an inviting display of book for all level readers.
It would also help my students to easily select a just right book in our classroom library and continue to develop their reading and a passion for books.
