Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The fourth grade students of our school come from a wide background of experiences and cultures. Our students are enthusiastic, happy children that are always willing to learn and try their best. The students take pride in their learning and persevere through struggles they may face.

We teach at a Title One School where many of the students receive free breakfast and lunch, coming from hard working families that may not always have the opportunity to show their children much outside of their neighborhood.

My Project

The fourth grade social studies curriculum focuses on the history of New York. We have traveled through the past to learn about the early people of both New York State and New York City, and will be completing that journey by learning about the history of immigration into NYC through Ellis Island; focusing on the path taken by immigrants from Ireland, Italy and Germany. This unit of study will also focus on the daily struggles the immigrants faced after living in NYC, such as tenement housing and the typical lifestyle of a child during this time period. The unit is cross-curricular and will end with the students completing a written narrative from the perspective of a child overcoming the struggles brought about by their surroundings. This project is a field trip to allow the students to trace the steps of the immigrants they will be studying. Through this field trip, our students can connect what they learn through the text to a real life experience: they can see the process that needed to be followed before any immigrant was allowed into the country. They can experience how some hardships were faced along the path to a better life for these immigrants of the past. They can see firsthand accounts of the experience, which will allow them to have a better perspective when completing their writing piece. They can see where families' dreams came true while other families faced unexpected struggles. They can turn what would be just another reading assignment into a life experience.

Your donation to this project will help my students learn firsthand what the immigration process at Ellis Island was like, and allow them to take a journey through its halls to gain an understanding of how Ellis Island shaped the history of NYC.
