Look Who's Reading Now: The Kindergarten Way

My students need books on their varied reading levels to read independently in and out of school.

My Students

Do you remember when you first began to recognize sounds, letters, and words? Kindergarten is the year when we begin to read books. Having a book to read daily, provides ownership for what we are learning in the classroom. By providing each child with a book that they can take home and read.

My students attend a Title One school in South Carolina.

Our kindergartens are not able to check out books from our school library. Many of them do not have an At-Home Library where they can access books to read. They are eager learners and once they begin to recognize sounds and letters, and put those together making words, they want to read everything.

My Project

We need books to go into a classroom library that students will be able to read in class daily. They will also be able to checkout books to take home to read. Many do not have access to books and home, being able to provide them with a book that they can read on their own will be great. They will learn to look for words that they know, decode words, look for patterns and chunks, basically use the reading strategies they are learning in school on a daily basis to become proficient readers.

By having a classroom library with a variety of books, students will have the opportunity to grow and make choices, which is important in kindergarten.

Our kindergartens will be able to checkout books to take home to read. Students will gain a love of reading and words.
